Cherries much like blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, purple grapes pomegranate and other dark fruits, contain polyphenolic compounds such as flavonoids, secondary plant metabolites that provide the pigmentation characteristics of the fruit and also help protect the fruit from microbes and insects.

A study involving marathon runners included that those who drank cherry juice recovered faster after training than those who did not.

Cherry juice has been shown to be effective in easing attacks of gout and gouty arthritis, with patients reporting greater freedom of movement in their fingers and their toes.
