Antimicrobial properties of mangosteen

Mangosteen juice is made from tropical fruit that many views as particularly exquisite, including Queen Victoria of Britain.

Mangosteen has many different actions, including antioxidant, antitumoral, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral.

Mangosteen is well known for its beneficial effects on acne-prone skin, and several recent studies have found that these compounds can reduce inflammation in skin cells and inhibit the growth of acne-causing bacteria.

The antibacterial and antiviral properties might beneficial for those with inflammatory bowel disease.

Several of the xanthones have antibacterial properties. Some of the extracts have been found to stop the growth of fungi and virus as well.

Mangosteen may also inhibit the organisms that cause tuberculosis. In a study published in 2009 (Journal of Oral Science, Vol. 51, No. 3, 401-406, 2009), researchers found that alpha-mangostin was even more effective in killing Candida albicans, a common oral fungus that were two frequently prescribed medications.
