The xanthones found in mangosteen contain anti-cancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antibacterial and anti-viral properties.

The main xanthones are beta, gamma, and alpha-mangostin, 3-isomangostin, 9-hydroxycalabxanthone, gartanin, and garcinone. Alpha-mangostin and garcinone B, are the anti-inflammatory xanthones phytomolecules present in the pericarp of the mangosteen fruit that inhibit cyclooxygenase and prostaglandin E2 synthesis in rat glioma cells.
