Xanthones in mangosteen

The story of the healing powers of mangosteen started centuries ago in Asia. The peel, called pericarp, is where the powerful antioxidants and ligands are highly concentrated.

The main xanthones are beta, gamma, and alpha-mangostin, 3-isomangostin, 9-hydroxycalabxanthone, gartanin, and garcinone. Alpha-mangostin and garcinone B, are the anti-inflammatory xanthones phytomolecules present in the pericarp of the mangosteen fruit that inhibit cyclooxygenase and prostaglandin E2 synthesis in rat glioma cells.
